From Nazis to Serial Killers and Gwyneth Paltrow in between, this week’s reviews feature Academy Award nominated films, Amazon documentary series, and the Goop Netflix show that nobody needed.
Each week, Matt Tompkins watches way too many series, shows, movies and specials so that he can tell you what you should watch and what you shouldn’t watch. He does this service for you, not because he’s a couch potato, so if you see his wife please remind her of that…
Taika Waititi is a fantastic director and writer and he brings all of his clever wit, humor, and innocence to a subject that most people fear…Nazis. If you give the film a chance it really isn’t offensive at all when you understand that this is from a young boy’s perspective who has been brain washed by propaganda from Hitler’s nazi regime.
The film reminds us that during all of the cruelty and the millions dead there were innocent children growing up in the middle of all of it. Kids with imaginations who just wanted to play and didn’t know any better.
Fortunately for Jo Jo Rabbit he finds his way thanks to a jewish girl and a caring mother for a movie that is funny, heartwarming and a fresh take on a horrifying period of the human race.
Verdict: A Must Watch (Oscar Winner!)
Ted Bundy: Falling For A Killer
I almost didn’t watch this Amazon original short documentary series because it feels like Ted Bundy has been exhausted from the Netflix series to the feature film with Zac Efron (who looks way too similar and I can’t unsee him as Ted Bundy now!), BUT I am glad I gave this a chance.
It is told from the perspective that is often overlooked…the victims. All the women, his girlfriend included, who were victims of the most horrible crimes. The series ties the rise in these assaults and murders to the rise of women’s rights and equality in America.
The biggest point that I think this series makes is that we fall into the trap of immortalizing killers like Ted Bundy and Charles Manson and completely overlook the true heroes of these stories – The women who survived, overcame, or fell victim to horrible violence.
Verdict: A Good Watch
The Goop Lab Docuseries (Netflix)
First off, yes, Gwyneth Paltrow is one of my least favorite people and I think Goop is full of exactly what it rhymes with…SH*T. HOWEVER, for anyone who thinks that Goop is giving them true medical advice and don’t think before they shove a stone into their vagina, well, I’m sorry but…you are an idiot.
The series is interesting as it focuses on alternate cures such as mind over matter, mushroom therapy (as in tripping your ass off), and more which are actually interesting things that real doctors are researching and using around the world…BUT…
I still can’t get past things like a candle that “Smells like my vagina” (not mine, Goop’s) that SOLD OUT on their website!.
