For some people, divorce is freeing and provides a second-chance, but on the flip side, it can be a seriously painful time for others. If you’re trying to be a good friend and confidant to someone who’s newly divorced, you should be aware that some well-meaning comments can actually sting to the newly single. You’ll want to choose your words carefully and according to relationship experts, these are the phrases you’ll want to avoid saying to them.

  • I never liked them for you anyway” – You may think this is reassuring, but relationship experts say it’s actually the worst thing to tell someone who just got divorced. Dating coach Connell Barrett explains that while you think this will make your friend feel better, it’s hurtful because it calls out their judgement in choosing a partner.
  • What happened?” – This question doesn’t show empathy, it’s just a way to satisfy your curiosity. This person is likely feeling fragile, please don’t make them give you the blow-by-blow account of their breakup.
  • Good thing that’s all in the past now” – You may be trying to look at the bright side for your friend, but remember, they may be devastated that the life they built with someone is over, so they’re not celebrating just yet.
  • I know the perfect person for you to date” – We get it, you want to help your friend move on, but it’s probably too soon to play matchmaker just yet. At least let the ink dry on the divorce papers before you start trying to hook them up.
  • Take all the time you need to stay home and regroup” – They may feel like cocooning at home for comfort after the split, but you can still encourage meaningful interaction, even if it’s just dropping off a home-cooked meal to show you care. We need human connection to be happy and a divorced person may want to replace that connection with their BFFs, so be there for them if they want company.
